Middle and Elementary Student Assistance Program Grades K to 6 The Middle and Elementary Student Assistance Program (MESAP), provided in conjunction with the Human Services Center, is a program geared for at-risk youth in kindergarten through sixth grade. MESAP is designed to assist school personnel in identifying issues that pose barriers to students’ learning and school success.
If a child is exhibiting behavioral problems (i.e. anger, withdrawal) or experiencing difficulties associated with stress-related events (i.e. divorce, death of a loved one), a confidential assessment by a mental health or drug and alcohol professional may be requested. Parental consent is required.
Lawrence County Drug and Alcohol Commission staff will work with students individually or in groups depending on their needs. Issues often addressed include coping skills, social skills, peer pressure, self-esteem and anger management. Additionally, consulting and working with parents and school personnel are important aspects of this program. Our goal is to assist youth in developing the skills necessary to make positive decisions and to prevent experimentation with drugs and alcohol as a coping mechanism.
During the summer months, we offer programming to various youth groups and organizations.
MESAP services are provided at no cost. To access drug and alcohol MESAP services, please contact school personnel or the Lawrence County Drug and Alcohol Commission at (724) 658-5580. |
